Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi
Hoan Kiem Lake, or Ho Guom, meaning Sword Lake, is the name of the famous lake in the center of Hanoi. It is known for its historical and cultural significance for the locals and as a tourist stopover when visiting the city.
The lake is related to the well-known story of King Le Thai To (1385-1433) returning the precious sword to the Tortoise God after defeating the Minh invaders. Since then, the lake has been officially named Hoan Kiem Lake—Returning the Sword, but the locals like to call it Sword Lake for short.
With its turtle town in the middle, this lake has become a symbol of Hanoi's people. Although tall buildings surround it, it is an ideal resting place for locals and tourists in the early morning or late afternoon to escape the bustling ancient quarters.
Besides, many historical buildings in the lake, such as Thap But, Ngoc Son Temple, and The Huc Bridge, will be a good background for your beautiful photos to remember this place. Typically, at night, the system of colorful lights creates a brilliant space.
Walking around the lake is considered the highlight activity for most visitors. Step slowly on its pavement while inhaling the fresh air from the lake, and looking at motorbikes and cars going up and down the streets around the lake can give you a different feeling.
