Quang Tri Citadel

Quang Tri Citadel was built in 1809, under the reign of King Gia Long, in the area of Thach Han commune, Hai Lang, Quang Tri province. Today, this relic is located on Ly Thai To Street, Ward 2, Quang Tri City, Quang Tri Province, Vietnam.

According to historical records, the Quang Tri Citadel was built to serve as the administrative and military center of Quang Tri Province under the Nguyen Dynasty.

Initially, this was just a small and rectangular citadel built of earth. In 1837, King Minh Mang rebuilt it to be more solid and wider.

The four sides of the citadel were built with baked bricks, and molasses and oyster lime were used as adhesives. The appearance of the restored structure was square, with four main gates facing four directions: East, West, South, and North. The four corners of the citadel were four forts protruding outward. Surrounding the citadel was a deep moat for defense purposes.

Inside the citadel, many architectural works were built as the administrative headquarters of Quang Tri Province under the Nguyen Dynasty, such as Ty Phien, Ty Niet, Kiem Hoc House, and military barracks.

Over time, historical events and the devastation of war have caused Quang Tri Citadel countless significant and minor damages. The architectural works inside, as well as its original function, have changed a lot.

However, the scale and general appearance design of the citadel built during the Minh Mang period are still preserved today.

When you come to Quang Tri Citadel, you will quickly recognize that the appearance of the citadel is quite similar to that of the outer architecture of Hue Citadel.

Nowadays, the prominent works inside include a memorial, citadel museum, bell tower, relics of the citadel, and a place to learn about the history of the struggle there. You can also learn about the beauty of a provincial citadel under the last feudal dynasty of Vietnam.

Opening hours are from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The ticket price for this place is currently free of charge.

In addition, the management board of the ancient citadel relic also supports the organization of incense and flower offering ceremonies at the memorial area for visitors upon request. Please get in touch with the management board for detailed instructions if you wish to perform this activity.
